Citing an elegant introduction from [Wikiola: The music business resource Wiki]:
Low bit (short for low bitrate, also known as lobit) is a musical aesthetic characterized by lossy data compression artifacts caused by encoding songs at low bitrates. Artists making low-bit music believe that if a song is good, it can be appreciated at any bitrate or on any speakers.
A subset of the low-bit modality is the iconic chiptune, which is a style of electronic music made using programmable synthesizers. From about the mid 1970s onward, chiptune compositions would accompany most electronic games, and the genre arguably passed into a renaissance in the 1980s. Hardware-based music was implemented on a variety of systems throughout the decades, with many of those having graduated into electronic heaven by now.
One surviving and ever-popular format is the so-called MIDI file, which is the native home to the Doom soundtrack among many others. MIDI compositions can be played as-is on any worthwhile modern media playerm, and many (literally, tens of thousands) popular pieces from culture have been transcribed (and thus approximated) in MIDI format.
Collected here are a few highly-acclaimed tracks from the golden age of 8- and 16-bit music, along with whatever else tastefully fits. When the original quality of the composition suffers too greatly by converting to MIDI, good old MP3 comes to the rescue.
